Resolved: Magic Eye FX Gaze Functionality Issue

We have resolved the issue caused by the Tobii Experience Software for Windows (I-Series) version 4.203.0.33929 and the corresponding update for PCEye 5 released in January 2024. This update disrupted the gaze functionality in Magic Eye FX games. Tobii Dynavox support paused this update once the issue was reported to contain its impact. How to Fix Your System with Magic Eye FX Installed

  1. Download the Latest Installer:

  2. Run the Installer:

    • When prompted, click Continue and select the Upgrade Option to begin the download of the new versions.
  3. Complete the Installation:

    • After the installation has finished, close the installer and open Magic Eye FX (or Pro) from the desktop shortcut icon. You will now see Magic Eye FX v2.2.0 at the top left of the application window. The software is ready to use!

Updates and New Features Added in v2.2.0

Since we had to rebuild the software, we added a few useful extra features:

  • PWA (Progressive Web App) Version of the Controller App:

    • Simply point your device camera at the QR code in Connect Device and follow the link to pair any device. Devices must be on the same network.
    • Yes, the native iOS and Android versions of the app are still available
  • New Remote Buttons to Control Content from the Controller App:

    • Toggle Cursor on/off: Same functionality as the keyboard shortcut Alt + C.
    • Add Stimulus Object to the Screen: Same as pressing the S key in supported activities.
    • Toggle Gaze Particle Trail on/off: Same as using the Caps Lock key.
    • Adjust Dwell Time: Use the Up and Down arrow keys.
    • Pause Activity on/off: Toggle pause with the P key.
  • Updated Activities: To support new eye tracking methods.

  • Added Hyperthreading: To SensoryCore.exe to increase processing speeds.

  • Updated Unity Version and Plugins: For improved performance.

  • Improved Camera Handling: In Magic Eye FX Pro and Magic Analytics.

 


Technical Details of the Update

For those who have requested info about the technical aspects of the issue:

  • The Tobii Experience update disrupted the gaze functionality due to the deprecation of the Tobii SDK for Unity. This meant changes in the Tobii Windows Experience Update did not support the older DLLs that we relied on for Tobii trackers to work with our applications.
  • We replaced the old eye-tracking components and built support for the newer Tobii Stream Engine platform. This required extensive updates and new scripts to ensure compatibility with all parts of Magic Eye FX and Magic Eye FX Pro, which is why it took 4 months to complete.
  • Tobii has assured us that developing on their Stream Engine platform is robust and will prevent this issue from recurring in the future.
